Dear all,
One of the actions on me from the last meeting was to provide an update on the Nexus work that ORNL are doing.
For 6.10 they are planning to undertake a new implementation of LoadEventNexus. This was found to be the slowest step in many of their workflows. Investigation of this algorithm found it was spending much of its time doing other things than reading from disk. The suggested solution is to move away from the current method of allocating all the events and then reusing code for sorting and compressing. Instead they plan to create a histogram whilst reading through events and then converting that data to an EventList.
There will be instances where this new method will not be used:
- Small event files
- Files with period data
- Files with weighted events
There is much more detail about their plans here - https://github.com/mantidproject/mantid/issues/36594 .
Let me know if you have any questions about this and I will follow up with Pete at ORNL.
All the best
Sarah

Dear all,
We are progressing with drafting two epics to improve Nexus loading (main project and an enabler project) with the hope of putting them up for review at the next meeting in February. For the main epic we need key stakeholders from the different science groups. At the moment Rob has listed board members. However I wondered if there were any others he could approach instead? I'm more than happy if you all feel you would be appropriate stakeholders but wanted to make sure before we finish drafting this one.
For reference this is the main epic that I'm needing stakeholders for - https://isisneutronmuon.atlassian.net/jira/software/c/projects/SS/boards/5?…
For info - both of the epics are a bit more fully formed than when Pas looked last week. Unfortunately Rob's initial attempts to upload the information did not work! All resolved now though.
Please could you let me know of any alternative/additional stakeholders by 12th January?
Thanks
Sarah

Dear all,
Further to our recent conversations about Error Reporter I wanted to update you with a piece of work we have done. As a temporary measure it will be mandatory to include an e-mail address in the error report. It will only be in versions of Mantid from tomorrow onwards (so the next nightly to be published and v6.9 onwards). Our privacy policy has also been updated in line with these changes.
This is only intended as a stop gap measure to enable support to better respond to error reports. A more considered, long-term solution will be provided through the Epic which should be up for review in February.
If anyone has any queries about being asked for contact details please can they e-mail mantid-help(a)mantidproject.org<mailto:mantid-help@mantidproject.org> .
Many thanks

Dear all,
As part of the work to complete the Error Reporter Epic for our next prioritisation meeting error reports over a 4 week period from mid-September to mid-October were looked at. Of all the reports submitted only 3% were actionable - i.e. only 3% had contact information to be able to request further information to try and resolve them and/or provided sufficient information to enable us to reproduce the error.
Clearly this highlights how important it is to overhaul the error reporting system. However, even if the epic comes up at the next prioritisation meeting in February (as we currently plan) we are unlikely to be able to start work until the summer. Even then we might not get a solution in place before the end of 2024.
As a result I wonder if it would be possible for you to highlight this issue with your networks? The hope being we can improve on this figure a little before the new Error Reporter is in place. If we are only able to respond to around 3% of error reports then it is no wonder we have gained a reputation for not doing anything. We have a much higher response rate for e-mails through to mantid-help(a)mantidproject.org<mailto:mantid-help@mantidproject.org> so I would recommend people use this rather than relying on the error reporter.
I have also highlighted this research to our partners on the Mantid Technical Working Group so that they can highlight the issue with their networks at the other facilities.
Many thanks
