Subject: STFC Cloud - Operating System End of Life Notification
Good Afternoon (and Happy New Year),
We are getting in touch to inform you about End of Life (EOL) dates and decommissioning procedures for some of our Operating System Images, specifically:
* centos-7-nogui - EOL 30/06/2024
* centos-7-gui - EOL 30/06/2024
* scientificlinux-7-nogui - EOL 30/06/2024
* scientificlinux-7-gui - EOL 30/06/2024
* centos-stream-8-nogui - EOL 31/05/2024
* centos-stream-8-gui - EOL 31/05/2024
* ubuntu-bionic-18.04-nogui - EOL 31/05/2023
* ubuntu-bionic-18.04-gui - EOL 31/05/2023
What this means is that the above images will no longer receive any maintenance or security updates and continuing to operate machines with these images poses a risk to the platform as a whole.
As such access to the above images will be revoked as of 12:00pm on Friday 5th January 2024. This means that you will not be able to create and new machines using any of the above images but any existing machines will not be affected.
Following the revocation of access to the images, we request that all users running machines with the above images delete or replace their VMs as soon as possible. Over time we will contact user communities individually to ensure this action takes place.
Note that in this instance we will not accept users conducting an 'in-place upgrade' of the Operating System on their machines.
Note also that any users running machines with self-managed images from the above Operating System families must also delete or replace their VMs as soon as possible.
Below is a recommended replacement for each Operating System family:
* centos-7 -> rocky-8 or rocky-9 (pending QA testing)
* scientificlinux-7 -> rocky-8 or rocky-9 (pending QA testing)
* centos-stream-8 -> rocky-8 or rocky-9 (pending QA testing)
* ubuntu-bionic-18.04 -> ubuntu-focal-20.04 or ubuntu-jammy-22.04 (pending QA testing)
If you have any questions or concerns, or require support with the actions requested in this notice please contact cloud-support(a)stfc.ac.uk<mailto:cloud-support@stfc.ac.uk>
Thanks,
STFC Cloud Operations Group
